Key Bridge and the Ag Community: Impact Information

Pray for Baltimore.png
On behalf of the Maryland Department of Agriculture, we extend our deepest sympathies tall those affected by the recent Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the first responders who bravely rushed to the scene.

As we grapple with the implications of this tragedy, we also recognize the potential impact on the local and national economy, particularly within the agricultural community. The Port of Baltimore serves as a crucial link in the supply chain for Maryland's farmers and the broader national agricultural community, facilitating the export of agricultural products. The temporary closure of this vital gateway will have far-reaching implications, affecting not only the local agricultural industry but also the national economy. We recognize the substantial challenges that farmers will face due to this unforeseen  disruption. ~ Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks

What Happened:
On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, a cargo ship, M/V DALI (Singapore-flagged), collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This collision caused the center portion of the bridge (N/B I-695 and S/B I-695) to collapse into the water, obstructing the Port of Baltimore's main channel. Sadly, six workers lost their lives in this tragic incident. The transportation and shipping sectors have been significantly impacted.

How We Plan to Assist:
As the Maryland Department of Agriculture, we are committed to closely monitoring the situation and providing unwavering support to our industry stakeholders and partners. We will communicate relevant information regarding the import and export of agricultural commodities, products, and equipment, with a focus on minimizing the impact of this tragic event on our agricultural community. As we navigate through the aftermath of this tragedy, we will continue to provide updates, guidance, and support to our agricultural community. We are dedicated to keeping our stakeholders informed as we work towards recovery and resilience.
